EMR Helps Identify University's Health Care Needs
Interesting article from POSP website:
http://www.posp.ab.ca/alberta-emr-experiences-list/emr-helps-identify-university.aspx
Colds, influenzas and back pain used to be the top reasons students, staff and faculty sought a physician at Mount Royal University’s EnCana Wellness Centre.
The Calgary university has now identified another health concern moving closer to the top of the list thanks in part to information collected through its new electronic medical record (EMR).
“Mental health issues now rank as high as second as the reason for a visit, up from previous reviews when they were as low as ninth overall,” says Francesca Mancini, wellness services administrator.
Being able to track such information on the EMR and gain access quickly is invaluable to Mancini who serves as clinic manager. It helps her determine where resources best meet the needs for the university’s patients in terms of future programming and staffing.
“Everything is based on the return on investment,” says Mancini, noting statistics can sway the decision to fund or not to fund a service. “Reporting is robust in this program.”
The clinic implemented the Med Access EMR solution last year after using paper files for the past 20 years. Med Access is one of Alberta’s three qualified service providers (EMR vendors) in the Physician Office System Program, the provincial program that provides funding to physicians to enable them to adopt EMRs.
Mancini and her colleagues felt that an EMR would eventually improve efficiencies at the clinic where physicians record about 9,000 visits during a 10-month period. It will also provide better health care to patients who may someday need to access their health records elsewhere in the province.
“There are efficiencies now, but when the rest of the province catches up there will be real efficiencies,” she notes. For example, one of the labs they currently use sends results electronically, while the other two still provide paper copies which must be scanned into patient files. This means extra steps must be taken by clinic staff.
The EMR also helps Mancini ensure the physician’s time is being used wisely. She has noticed chronic disease management patients often require 20- to 30-minute appointments rather than the usual 10-minute time slot. Armed with that information, she can possibly draw from the resources of the primary care network as an opportunity to expand on patients’ care and potentially shorten physicians’ appointments.
Mancini says time is also saved on phone calls. Now when a patient calls to follow up on results, staff can find the information on the EMR more quickly than with the paper system. It’s simply a matter of calling up the patient file on the computer rather than tracking down a paper chart that could be anywhere in the clinic at a given time.

Med Access Announces Industry Leading e-Referral Network
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Med Access users now able to electronically send complete patient data and requests to other health care providers
Med Access announces launch of an exclusive e-Referral Network that allows Specialists, GPs, urgent care clinics, call groups, and allied health professionals to electronically forward any information in a patient's chart directly to the next care provider where it becomes fully-operable information in that provider's Med Access Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Health care providers have complete control over the scope of the patient information that they choose to send and receive.
